17歳の時、シングル「I Let Myself Go」で60年にデビュ－、70年代は「Roulette Label」から多数のシングル盤をリリ－スしているノ－ザンソウルの大ベテラン歌手です、また”Minnie Riperton”とは大親友で、高校時代にコンビを組んでいたいたのは有名な逸話です
78年にカナダのディスコプロデュ－サ「Tony Green」の後押しで初のソロアルバムをリリ－ス、80年には名作「No Way」が大ヒットします。息子の”Freddie James”は79年、｢Get Up And Boogie｣が”全米ダンスチャート・5位”、娘の”Rosalind Hunt”も｢Cheri｣で83年、｢Murphy's Law｣が”全米ダンスチャート・1位”を記録。親子3人で大成功を収めています
