フィラデルフィアで51年に産まれた偉大なベ－ス奏者”Stanley Clarke”、20歳になった71年、「Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers」、「Stan Getz」のバンドに参加して、プロデビュ－、当時は「ウッドベ－スの驚異的な高速プレイ」で注目され、”Pharoah Sanders”や”Bill Evans”からもゲストで招かれます
72年、”Chick Corea”と共に「Return To Forever」を結成、77年までに7枚のアルバムとライブアルバムをリリ－ス、”Airto Moreira”,”Lenny White”と黄金のリズム隊を形成、70年代を代表する「フュ－ジョン・グル－プ」として活躍しました
ソロとしては、72年に「Children of Forever」でアルバムデビュー。73年より、「アレンビック社製のエレクトリック・ベース」をメインの楽器として、使うようになります。以降、最新作は、2014年までに「24枚のアルバム」をリリ－ス
